How Does the Human Body Maintain Homeostasis?

Human Body Homeostasis

Many individuals have heard the world homeostasis at one time or another, but what does it really mean? Working as a fine-tuned machine, the human body has a way of keeping its inner environment constant no matter what the outside environment is like.

Homeostasis maintained in humans acts similar to that of a finely tuned machine. Complex in its nature and needing little supplemental factors to carry out its function, humans can thrive in virtually any environment and adapt to many different diets and lifestyles. The reason humans have been successful as a species lies greatly in their adaptability and ability to maintain homeostasis.

With a wide variety of climates and other factors that the body is subjected to, the process of homeostasis maintained in humans is an incredibly complex. Using a system of vital organs, enzymes, and waste management functions, food and water is converted in energy and used to fuel all of the parts of the body. Among the most important ways that humans maintain homeostasis is by regulating their own body temperature and PH automatically. Some of the basic bodily functions that we might take for granted actually help the body maintain these important aspects of survival. For example, sweating and shivering are ways to keep cool and warm and keep the body at the same internal temperature.

Another widely important factor in maintaining homeostasis is the PH level of the body. Requiring a higher alkaline content of water helps keep the machine in working order and produces an overall better state of health. Many of the waste management organs such as the kidney and liver filter out the acidic properties of the food and water we ingest in order to properly hydrate the body and purge it of unwanted acidic properties. Although these functions are carried out by the body naturally, there are ways to help the natural process and keep the body at an elevated state of homeostasis. By limiting the amount of acidic materials ingested, it becomes easier for the body to regulate itself and keep in working order.

Various areas of the body serve different purposes and create a perfect balance within. Another important system of the body is the nervous system. Basic bodily functions such as heart rate and breathing are regulated by the nervous system as is the urinary and digestive systems. A gland within the brain known as the pituitary gland releases hormones and enzymes based on specific materials introduced within the body. Also helping to adjust the body’s balance of fluids and electrolytes, these processes become much easier to regulate when ingesting food and water higher in alkalinity.

One of the ways to help maintain a higher level of homeostasis is the use of alkaline water. Created with the use of a water ionizer, this water is easier for the body to process and aids in natural regulation of the body’s inner environment. With a constant challenge for the body to maintain balance, diet that lacks the right nutrients and PH can be more detrimental than one might think.

Exposure to drugs, alcohol, and other toxins can overwork the body and lead to an imbalance within it. Also established is the fact that overuse of these substances can create an accumulation within the body making it more difficult to perform its natural maintenance.

Aside from an improper diet, lack of sleep, stress, and depression can change the flow of the nervous and respiratory systems and destroy homeostasis within the body. When it comes to regulating your own inner environment, every little step counts.

The body’s ability to maintain homeostasis is a truly amazing phenomenon and it can perform its customs quite well no matter what you put into it. However, knowing how the human body maintains homeostasis and creating a diet that helps promote its natural process can create an overall better sense of health and help protect against harmful illnesses.
